Vaiśampāyana said: O bull of the Bhārata lineage! The gods were delighted that Kaca had attained the knowledge. They learnt the knowledge that Kaca had learnt and were content.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे भरत वंश के बैल! देवता प्रसन्न हुए कि काका को ज्ञान प्राप्त हो गया। उन्होंने वह ज्ञान सीखा जो काका ने सीखा था और संतुष्ट थे।
They assembled together and told Śatakratu, "O Purandara! The time has come to display your valour and kill your enemies."
वे एकत्र हुए और शतक्रतु से कहा, "हे पुरंदर! अपनी वीरता प्रदर्शित करने और अपने शत्रुओं को मारने का समय आ गया है।"
Having been thus addressed, Maghavan agreed and set out with the assemblage of thirty gods. He saw many women in the forest.

The ladies were sporting in a forest that was like Citrarathā's. Changing himself into the wind, he mixed up all their garments.
स्त्रियाँ चित्ररथ के समान वन में क्रीड़ा कर रही थीं। उसने अपने आप को हवा में बदलते हुए उनके सारे वस्त्रों को मिश्रित कर दिया।
After emerging from the water, the women then each picked up a garment that was nearest her.
पानी से बाहर आने के बाद, महिलाओं ने एक-एक कपड़ा उठाया जो उनके सबसे करीब था।
Devayānī's garment was then picked up by Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vrishaparva, who did not know about the mixing up.
तब देवयानी का वस्त्र वृषपर्वा की पुत्री शर्मिष्ठा ने उठाया, जिसे इस मिश्रण के बारे में पता नहीं था।
O lord of kings! At that, a quarrel arose between Devayānī and Śarmiṣṭhā.
हे राजाओं के स्वामी! इस पर देवयानी और शर्मिष्ठा के बीच झगड़ा हो गया।

Devayānī said: "O āsuri! Despite being inferior to me, how did you dare to take up my garment? You are devoid of good conduct. No good will come to you."
देवयानी ने कहा: "हे आसुरी! मुझसे हीन होते हुए भी तुमने मेरा वस्त्र उठाने का साहस कैसे किया? तुम अच्छे आचरण से रहित हो। तुम्हारा भला नहीं होगा।"

शर्मिष्ठोवाच आसीनं च शयानं च पिता ते पितरं मम स्तौति वन्दति चाभीक्ष्णं नीचैः स्थित्वा विनीतवत्
Śarmiṣṭhā replied: "Whether my father is seated or lying down, your father is always humbly below him and always praises him.
शर्मिष्ठा ने उत्तर दिया: "चाहे मेरे पिता बैठे हों या लेटे हों, आपके पिता हमेशा विनम्रतापूर्वक उनके नीचे रहते हैं और हमेशा उनकी प्रशंसा करते हैं।
You are the daughter of a man who begs, praises and holds up his hand for alms. I am the daughter of a man who is praised and stretches out his hand to give alms, not to receive.
तुम उस आदमी की बेटी हो जो भीख मांगता है, स्तुति करता है और भीख के लिए हाथ फैलाता है। मैं उस आदमी की बेटी हूं जिसकी प्रशंसा की जाती है और वह दान लेने के लिए नहीं, बल्कि देने के लिए हाथ बढ़ाता है।

अनायुधा सायुधाया रिक्ता क्षुभ्यसि भिक्षुकि लप्स्यसे प्रतियोद्धारं न हि त्वां गणयाम्यहम्
You are defenceless and deserted. You are a beggar who trembles before me, who is armed. Find an equal. I do not regard you as one."
आप निरीह और निर्जन हैं. तुम एक भिखारी हो जो मेरे सामने कांपता है, जो हथियारबंद है। एक समान खोजें. मैं तुम्हें अपना नहीं मानता।"
Vaiśampāyana said: On hearing this, Devayānī stood up erect and clung to the garment. But Śarmiṣṭhā threw her into a well and went off to her city.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: यह सुनकर देवयानी सीधी खड़ी हो गई और वस्त्र से चिपक गई। लेकिन शर्मिष्ठा ने उसे एक कुएं में फेंक दिया और अपने शहर चली गई।
The evil Śarmiṣṭhā took her to be dead. In extreme anger, she did not even bother to look down.
दुष्ट शर्मिष्ठा ने उसे मरा हुआ समझ लिया। अत्यधिक गुस्से में उसने नीचे देखने की जहमत भी नहीं उठाई.
Nāhuṣa's son, Yayāti, came to that place, looking for deer to hunt. He was thirsty and his two horses were tired.
नहुष का पुत्र ययाति शिकार के लिए हिरणों की तलाश में उस स्थान पर आया। वह प्यासा था और उसके दोनों घोड़े थक गये थे।
Nāhuṣa's son saw a well in which there was no water. But the king saw a maiden who was as radiant as the flames of a fire.
नहुष के पुत्र ने एक कुआँ देखा जिसमें पानी नहीं था। परन्तु राजा ने एक ऐसी कन्या देखी जो आग की लपटों के समान तेजस्वी थी।
Seeing her there, he addressed the maiden who was celestial in beauty. The best of kings pacified her with extremely soft words and asked,
उसे वहाँ देखकर, उसने उस युवती को संबोधित किया जो सुंदरता में दिव्य थी। श्रेष्ठ राजाओं ने अत्यंत कोमल शब्दों से उसे शांत किया और पूछा,
"O one with nails the shade of copper! O one with the dusky complexion! O one adorned in beautiful gems and earrings! Who are you? Why are you in such deep grief? Why are you sighing in distress?
"हे तांबे के समान नाखूनों वाले! हे सांवले रंग वाले! हे सुंदर रत्नों और कुंडलों से सुशोभित! आप कौन हैं? आप इतने गहरे दुःख में क्यों हैं? आप संकट में क्यों आहें भर रहे हैं?

कथं च पतितास्यस्मिन्कूपे वीरुत्तृणावृते दुहिता चैव कस्य त्वं वद सर्वं सुमध्यमे
How did you come to fall into this well that is full of creepers and gras-s? O one with the slender waist! Whose daughter are you? Tell me truly."
लता और घास से भरे हुए इस कुएँ में तुम कैसे गिरे? हे पतली कमर वाले! तुम किसकी बेटी हो? मुझे सच-सच बताओ।”

देवयान्युवाच योऽसौ देवैर्हतान्दैत्यानुत्थापयति विद्यया तस्य शुक्रस्य कन्याहं स मां नूनं न बुध्यते
Devayānī replied: "I am Śukra's daughter, who uses his knowledge to revive the daitya-s when they are killed by the gods. He does not know what has become of me.
देवयानी ने उत्तर दिया: "मैं शुक्र की बेटी हूं, जो देवताओं द्वारा मारे जाने पर दैत्यों को पुनर्जीवित करने के लिए अपने ज्ञान का उपयोग करती है। वह नहीं जानता कि मेरा क्या हो गया है।

एष मे दक्षिणो राजन्पाणिस्ताम्रनखाङ्गुलिः समुद्धर गृहीत्वा मां कुलीनस्त्वं हि मे मतः
O king! Here is my right hand, with nails that are the shade of copper. You seem to have been born into a good family.
हे राजा! यह मेरा दाहिना हाथ है, जिसके नाखून तांबे के रंग के हैं। ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि आपका जन्म किसी अच्छे परिवार में हुआ है।
I know you to be gentle, brave and famous. Grasp me by the hand and pull me out of the well into which I have fallen."
मैं जानता हूं कि आप सौम्य, बहादुर और प्रसिद्ध हैं। मेरा हाथ पकड़ो और मुझे उस कुएँ से बाहर खींचो जिसमें मैं गिर गया हूँ।"
Vaiśampāyana said: Having learnt that she was the daughter of a Brāhmaṇa, the king, who was Nāhuṣa's son, grasped her by the right hand and pulled her out of the well.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: यह जानकर कि वह एक ब्राह्मण की बेटी थी, राजा, जो नहुष का पुत्र था, ने उसे दाहिने हाथ से पकड़ लिया और उसे कुएं से बाहर निकाला।
After pulling the one with beautiful hips out of the well, Yayāti gently bid farewell and returned to his capital.
सुन्दर नितम्बों वाले को कुएँ से बाहर निकालने के बाद ययाति ने धीरे से विदा ली और अपनी राजधानी को लौट गये।

देवयान्युवाच त्वरितं घूर्णिके गच्छ सर्वमाचक्ष्व मे पितुः नेदानीं हि प्रवक्ष्यामि नगरं वृषपर्वणः
Devayānī said: "O Ghūrṇikā! Quickly go to my father and tell him what has happened. From now on, I refuse to enter Vrishaparva's city."
देवयानी ने कहा: "हे घूरिका! जल्दी से मेरे पिता के पास जाओ और उन्हें बताओ कि क्या हुआ है। अब से, मैं वृषपर्वा के शहर में प्रवेश करने से इनकार करती हूं।"
Vaiśampāyana said: Ghūrṇikā swiftly went to the āsura's palace. On seeing Kāvya, she spoke to him, her senses flustered.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: घुरनिक तेजी से असुर के महल में गया। काव्या को देखते ही उसने उससे बात की तो उसके होश उड़ गए।
"O immensely wise one! O immensely fortunate one! I tell you that Devayānī has been struck in the forest by Śarmiṣṭhā, Vrishaparva's daughter."
"हे अत्यंत बुद्धिमान! हे अत्यंत भाग्यशाली! मैं तुम्हें बताता हूं कि वन में देवयानी को वृषपर्वा की पुत्री शर्मिष्ठा ने मारा है।"
Having heard that his daughter had been struck by Śarmiṣṭhā, Kāvya quickly set out for the forest with a heavy heart.
यह सुनकर कि उसकी बेटी को शर्मिष्ठा ने मारा है, काव्या भारी मन से तुरंत जंगल की ओर निकल पड़ा।
When he found his daughter Devayānī in the forest, he engulfed her in his arms and sorrowfully said,
जब उन्हें जंगल में अपनी पुत्री देवयानी मिली तो उन्होंने उसे अपनी बाहों में भर लिया और दुःखी होकर बोले,
"It is through their own faults that people reap happiness and sorrow. I am sure that you must have done something wrong, which has now been purged."
"अपनी गलतियों के कारण ही लोग सुख और दुख पाते हैं। मुझे यकीन है कि आपने जरूर कुछ गलत किया होगा, जिसे अब शुद्ध कर दिया गया है।"
Devayānī replied: "Whether it is the purging of my fault or not, listen attentively to what Śarmiṣṭhā, Vrishaparva's daughter, told me. I am telling you truthfully. She said that you chanted praises to the daitya-s.
देवयानी ने उत्तर दिया: "चाहे यह मेरी गलती का प्रायश्चित हो या नहीं, वृषपर्वा की बेटी शर्मिष्ठा ने मुझसे जो कहा, उसे ध्यान से सुनो। मैं तुम्हें सच कह रही हूं। उसने कहा कि तुमने दैत्यों की स्तुति की है।"

एवं हि मे कथयति शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी वचनं तीक्ष्णपरुषं क्रोधरक्तेक्षणा भृशम्
With eyes red in anger and a harsh and sharp voice, this is what Vrishaparva's daughter, Śarmiṣṭhā, said.
क्रोध से लाल आंखें और कठोर और तीखे स्वर में वृषपर्वा की पुत्री शर्मिष्ठा ने यही कहा।
She said that I was the daughter of someone who always begged, chanted the praises of others and stretched out his hand for alms. And she was the daughter of one who was always praised, always granted and stretched out his hand to give alms.
उन्होंने कहा कि मैं ऐसे व्यक्ति की बेटी हूं जो हमेशा भीख मांगता था, दूसरों के गुण गाता था और भिक्षा के लिए हाथ फैलाता था। और वह उस व्यक्ति की बेटी थी जिसकी सदैव प्रशंसा की जाती थी, जिसे सदैव अनुदान दिया जाता था और जो भिक्षा देने के लिए अपना हाथ आगे बढ़ाता था।

इति मामाह शर्मिष्ठा दुहिता वृषपर्वणः क्रोधसंरक्तनयना दर्पपूर्णा पुनः पुनः
Eyes red with anger and full of pride, this is what Śarmiṣṭhā, Vrishaparva's daughter, repeatedly said.
क्रोध से लाल आँखें और गर्व से भरी हुई, यही बात वृषपर्वा की पुत्री शर्मिष्ठा ने बार-बार कही।
O father! If I am really the daughter of one who chants praises of others and stretches out his hand for alms, I must pay homage to Śarmiṣṭhā to obtain her favour. I have already told my friend that."
हे पिता! यदि मैं वास्तव में उस व्यक्ति की बेटी हूं जो दूसरों की प्रशंसा करता है और भिक्षा के लिए हाथ फैलाता है, तो मुझे उसका अनुग्रह प्राप्त करने के लिए शर्मिष्ठा को श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करनी चाहिए। मैंने यह बात अपने दोस्त को पहले ही बता दी है।"

शुक्र उवाच स्तुवतो दुहिता न त्वं भद्रे न प्रतिगृह्णतः अस्तोतुः स्तूयमानस्य दुहिता देवयान्यसि
Śukra replied: "O Devayānī! You are not the daughter of someone who always praises, asks for alms and receives. You are the daughter of someone who is always praised, but never praises.
शुक्र ने उत्तर दिया: "हे देवयानी! आप ऐसे व्यक्ति की बेटी नहीं हैं जो हमेशा प्रशंसा करता है, भिक्षा मांगता है और प्राप्त करता है। आप ऐसे व्यक्ति की बेटी हैं जिसकी हमेशा प्रशंसा की जाती है, लेकिन कभी प्रशंसा नहीं करती।

वृषपर्वैव तद्वेद शक्रो राजा च नाहुषः अचिन्त्यं ब्रह्म निर्द्वन्द्वमैश्वरं हि बलं मम
Vrishaparva knows this and so do Śākra and the king who is Nāhuṣa's son. Know my strength to be as inconceivable and incomparable as the supreme brāhman."
वृषपर्वा यह जानते हैं और शक्र तथा राजा जो नहुष के पुत्र हैं, भी यह जानते हैं। मेरी शक्ति को परम ब्रह्म के समान अकल्पनीय और अतुलनीय जानो।"
